The Community Justice Program (“CJP”) is a collaborative effort by the entire legal community to provide free neighborhood-based legal services to individuals who may not otherwise have access to the legal system. CJP’s partner, TRLA (Texas RioGrande Legal Aid) supports the program by coordinating all client intake through their toll-free hotline.

It is alarming to realize that fewer than 20 percent of low-income residents of South Texas can obtain access to legal assistance when faced with a civil problem. That means that four out of five people arrive at the courthouse door to find that they cannot afford the price of admission.
The first neighborhood clinic met at The Carver Academy on the east side of San Antonio in October of 2002. We opened our second clinic on the west side of San Antonio at St. Mary’s University’s Center for Legal and Social Justice in April of 2003. In addition, we have added a third clinic which meets four times each year at the Wesley Community Center. Currently, CJP has served over 1,600 indigent clients.
CJP accepts uncontested matters such as divorce, child custody modifications, guardianship proceedings, bankruptcy, simple landlord/tenant disputes, probate matters and wills. We do NOT accept criminal cases and cases involving family violence.
Clinics are held every month. The TRLA clinic is held on the 2nd Tuesday of each month, the St. Mary’s University’s clinic is on the 3rd Tuesday and the Wesley clinic is held of the 4th Tuesday. The clinics begin at 5:30 p.m. and are usually over at 7:30 p.m.

Would you like to host the Refreshments at a CJP clinic?
As you may know, we offer ‘heavy snacks” and drinks at the clinics for our volunteers who are generally coming directly from their offices beginning at 5:30 p.m.
The cost is $125 and we will proudly display your name and the name of your firm in recognition of your generosity at the refreshment table. We have had many individuals offer in the past and the suggestion was made to open it to all members.
If interested, please contact Amanda Reimherr Buckert @ amandab@sabar.org or 227-8822 ext. 24.
