The Elder Law section of the SABA focuses on areas of law related to the elderly including fraud, abuse, Medicaid planning, guardianships, durable powers of attorney, special needs trusts, medical powers of attorney, HIPPA regulations, directives to physicians, wills, estate planning and probate.

Elder Law section meetings are usually held at noon on the fourth Friday of each month at the Plaza Club, located on the top floor of the Frost Bank building, 100 W. Houston Street. However, there are a few times each year that no monthly meeting is held, so please confirm the meeting date by contacting a section officer.

Recent presentations have included estate recovery legislation by Patricia Sitchler of Schoenbaum, Curphy & Scanlan, nursing home abuse by Mark Coffee of the Texas Attorney General’s Office, and issues related to feeding tubes by the Hon. Polly Jackson Spencer, Judge, Bexar County Probate Court #1.

The section sponsors an annual seminar that addresses elder fraud and abuse. The seminar is usually held in May, is free to the public, and offers CLE opportunities to the local bar. section members have also assisted with the coordination and production of the annual Elder Law directory and helps support the Wills Clinic project of the San Antonio Bar Foundation which provides free wills to low-income residents of Bexar County and the surrounding areas.
