Attorney Badges

Attorney Badge applications procedure and guidelines have been updated and cleared by Bexar County Facilities following an incident at a security check point.

SABA staff will again be accepting updated badge applications beginning Monday, November 13. The Kelmar Background Inquiry Release included in the previous application is no longer a part of the application. Any badge applications received by staff previous to Oct. 26 are secured and the Kelmar Background Inquiry Release has been shredded and properly disposed. As a reminder, Bexar County Security granted a courtesy extension for badges with October expiration dates – these badges will be accepted until Dec. 1. Questions may be directed to Dan Curry, Director of Facilities, by phone at (210) 335-6735 or by email at dcurry@bexar.org. — Updated November 13, 2017 at 12:17 p.m.

PLEASE NOTE Bexar County’s Sheriff Courthouse Security has granted a courtesy extension for attorney badges with October expiration dates. These badges will be accepted until December 1, 2017.

The San Antonio Bar Association is now processing applications according to updated Bexar County Security regulations. Beginning in 2017, SABA must go through Bexar County to secure the cards and follow Bexar County’s new, consultant-recommended procedures. The rate for SABA and SACDLA members is $100, and the badge is good for TWO years.

PLEASE NOTE Bexar County’s Sheriff Courthouse Security will not be accepting the Kelmar Background Inquiry Release included in previous applications. Please only return the 3 page, original application to SABA offices. Staff has destroyed Kelmar forms received previous to Oct. 26.

How it works

  1. Complete the badge application. Applications MUST be notarized before or upon delivery. SABA staff will be able to notarize upon arrival.
  2. Mail or drop off the original, notarized application with payment to SABA offices (Bexar County Courthouse, 5th Floor, 100 Dolorosa, 78205)
  3. SABA staff will notify you when your application has been approved or denied and where to have your photo taken.
  4. Pick up badge upon receiving a SABA email notification that your badge is ready.

Cost

SABA/SACDLA Members: $100 new or renewal* badge
Non-member attorneys: $150 new or renewal* badge

*Attorneys must re-apply during bi-annual renewal as a background check is required every two years

Why this price? Bexar County’s new security procedures require more actions than were required previously. While this has impacted the rates, Bexar County badges are still on par with market value. Also, Bexar County badges are valid for a two-year period, which is unique to this county. Denton County ($200/yr), Harris County ($50/yr) and Dallas ($50/yr) all require attorneys to renew every year. SABA was able to maintain the two-year validity of attorney badges. If you have any remaining questions, please reach out to staff at (210) 227-8822.
